On October 9, 1817, the university in Ghent was established, with JC van Rotterdam as its first rector. This was part of a larger plan by Dutch King William I to promote academic progress in the southern provinces of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, which would later become Belgium. The university initially had four faculties - Humanities, Law, Medicine, and Science - and instruction was conducted in Latin. In its first year, there were 190 students and 16 professors. Following the Belgian Revolution in 1830, the number of students decreased, reaching a peak of 414. The faculties of humanities and science were temporarily dissolved but were reinstated in 1835.
