Tallinn University of Technology is the sole technical university in Estonia, founded in 1918. Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) is the main institution in Estonia for engineering and IT education. It offers higher education in various fields including engineering, technology, information technology, economics, science, and maritime studies. TalTech aims to encourage science, technology, and innovation and is a top provider of engineering and economic education in Estonia. TalTech offers a wide range of programs, from undergraduate to doctoral levels, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive and competitive education. Our faculty comprises experts and researchers who are at the forefront of their respective fields, providing students with access to cutting-edge knowledge and the latest developments in their areas of study. On September 17, 2018, Tallinn University of Technology decided to use a new shorter name, TalTech, instead of the previous abbreviations like TTÜ, TUT, and TTU.
The history of Tallinn University of Technology goes back to September 17, 1918. At that time, Estonia was under German occupation, and the Estonian Technical Society, which brought together local technical experts, began organizing specialized technical courses in the country. As Estonia gained independence, there was a growing demand for engineers, architects, and technicians. In 1919, the society transformed into a private school known as Tallinn College of Engineering (TT). In the early 1900s, Estonia realized the importance of having engineering specialists trained within the country. Previously, young Estonians had to go to St. Petersburg, Germany, or Riga for their specialized education. It became necessary to find ways for engineering-minded individuals to receive education in Estonia that was tailored to local conditions and requirements. This was a crucial step in Estonia's journey towards becoming an independent nation.
