Overview

The Maynooth University was established by the government as a college of Catholic lay and ministerial students in 1795. The lay college was founded in 1802 in Riverstown House on the south campus. With the splitting of Clongowes Wood, the college which had lay administrators was terminated in 1817 and its celebration exclusively as a Catholic conservatory for virtually 150 years.
