The University of Southampton originated as the Hartley Institution, which was established in 1862 thanks to a generous donation by Henry Robinson Hartley. Hartley, who came from a family of successful wine merchants, inherited a significant fortune. When he passed away in 1850, he left £103,000 to the Southampton Corporation for the purpose of promoting the study and advancement of the sciences. This funding was used to establish the institution on Southampton's High Street, in the city center. The university is made up of five faculties, each of which has several academic units. This current faculty structure was established in 2018, replacing a previous structure that had eight faculties. The Senate is the main authority in the university when it comes to academics. They have various responsibilities such as overseeing education and exams, granting degrees, and promoting research. The Senate consists of about 65 members, including Vice-Presidents, Deans, academic staff representatives from each faculty, and representatives from administrative groups involved in education. Students' Union representatives are also part of the Senate. The Vice-Chancellor serves as the chairperson of the Senate.

The University of Southampton, known as Soton, established in 1862, is a public research university located in Southampton, England.
