Boston University can trace its origins back to the Newbury Biblical Institute, which was established in Newbury, Vermont in 1839. It was officially chartered as Boston University by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1869. The university celebrated its centennial in both 1939 and 1969, and these dates may be found on official seals used by different schools within the university. Boston University offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, as well as professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, and law. It has 17 schools and colleges, including the newest addition, the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, established in 2014. The Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development was renamed in 2018 after merging with Wheelock College. In 2019, BU created the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, which is an interdisciplinary academic unit that trains students in computing and allows them to combine data science with their chosen field. In 2022, BU's medical school was renamed the Aram V. Chobanian & Edward Avedisian School of Medicine, thanks to a generous $100 million gift from Edward Avedisian, a renowned clarinetist.
