Australia has Tighten Visa Rules for International Students

This week, Australia said it would tighten visa rules for international students and migrant workers with low scores. The test for students will be tougher to address what it refers to as "a broken immigration system" and it will also halve the migrant intake over the next two years.

Australia's net immigration was predicted to have peaked at 510,000 in 2022–2023. As of mid-2025, the country hopes to reduce yearly intake to 250,000, which is in line with pre–pandemic levels.

According to experts, these changes are more likely to affect students who want to study in Australia and are not proficient in English and are enrolled in lower-level vocational programs to immigrate under a student visa. Australia is still in need of competent laborers, and it will continue to draw them in, they added.

At the same time, the tightening of visa rules for international students may also impact the popularity of Australia as a study-abroad destination.

The decision to slash migrant intake and tighten visa rules in Australia may push international students towards other abroad destinations such as the UK, the USA, Canada and Germany
