FMGE Exam 2023-24: Dates, Registration, Fees, Eligibility, Syllabus, Types
Updated on 06 October, 2023
The FMCGE is in short another name for "Foreign Medical Graduates Examination". It is properly organized twice a year by the National Board of Examination, or NBE. On March 15 of the year 2002, it was introduced. This exam is only for Indian medical professionals who have earned their MBBS degree in another country and wish to continue their work in India. After passing the FMGE exam, a candidate is eligible to be registered with the National Medical Commission (NMC), formerly the Medical Council of India (MCI). It is essentially a test for getting the Medical License.
The FMGE exam cannot be taken by any candidate. For the June session of the FMGE exam that is being held by the National Board of Examination, students who have successfully completed their MBBS programs from a country other than their home country and their Masters programs from understated universities will be granted an exemption.
Even if they do not show up for the FMGE exams in June, applicants will still receive a certificate that is either permanent or interim and has been approved by the MCI, India, or the State Medical Council. You can legally practice in India once you have this interim certificate.
NOTE: There are only three chances for the applicants to pass the FMGE exam. A candidate is disqualified from taking the exam if they do not pass it.
The FMGE exams' registration process is entirely online. Scholars who wish to apply for the exam must properly register by logging in online to the NBE's official website. The use of mobile devices to complete the application form is strongly not recommended.
Scholars will have the opportunity to correct any errors in their application with this window. The do that; you must open the "Correction Window." The National Board of the Examination has made it abundantly clear that applicants may make the alterations outlined below when completing the application:
The National Board of Examination issues the students' admit cards shortly after the application process is completed. It is fundamental that the candidates report their admit cards for the FMGE tests according to the recorded assessment place. If you don't show the admit card, you won't be allowed in.
Using the login information, the admit card can be downloaded from the NBE's official website. In the examination hall, don't forget to bring a hard copy of your admit card.
A comprehensive syllabus is made available by the National Board of Examination at least three months prior to the exam date. The current medical syllabus for FMGE exams has not been altered in any way by the National Medical Examination Commission.
The FMGE course syllabus:
Total number of questions: 100
Medicine and Associated Subjects
Total number of questions: 200
The official website of the "National Board of Examination" will display the FMGE exam results on the scheduled date. A provisional registration from either the State Medical Council or the National Medical Commission is granted to applicants who have been shortlisted.
Steps for Interpreting the FMGE Exams' Results
The most recent FMGE cutoff stipulates that applicants with a combined score of 50% are considered passed or eligible for the exams. When it comes to the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), one question that often arises is whether students need to pass all the subjects together in one attempt. The answer is yes! In order to successfully clear the FMGE, it is crucial for students to pass all the subjects in a single attempt. This requirement ensures that students have a comprehensive understanding of the medical curriculum, allowing them to provide safe and effective healthcare services. So, buckle up and give your best shot to conquer all the subjects in one go!
A candidate is allowed a maximum of three tries or attempts to pass the exam. To pass, applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50%. The FMGE exam is known for being challenging, resulting in a low pass rate. Therefore, the exam is designed to give candidates multiple opportunities to pass. However, it's important to make the most of each attempt by preparing thoroughly and staying focused.
Many students who qualify for this exam often wonder, "What can I do after clearing FMGE?" Once you pass this exam, you have several options to consider. Choose provisional registration and search for internships. Pursue MD/MS or Diploma courses in Medicine. Take the Combined Medical Services (CMS) exam or Civil Services exams. Pursue a Masters in Health Administration (MHA). Build a career in Clinical Research.
When the FMGE test transitioned to a computer-based format, a 15-minute tutorial was added to help candidates understand how to navigate the exam. This tutorial walks candidates through different aspects of the exam, including how to answer questions, review answers, select or deselect options, make changes, and mark responses. It is recommended that candidates go through this tutorial before starting the actual test. Additionally, candidates are required to acknowledge a non-disclosure agreement before taking the exam.

Get familiar with the Pattern and Structure: The FMGE exam is held twice a year, in May and December. Students can attempt the exam multiple times, and they need to score at least 50 percent to pass. The exam consists of 300 questions divided into two parts, covering 19 subjects equally. Therefore, it is important for students to practice answering questions in this format. They can also make notes that align with this examination pattern.
Focus on the Basics: It is recommended that students start their preparation by studying pre and para-clinical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, and Microbiology. This will help them build a strong foundation and better understand more complex subjects like surgery and medicine. While studying, it is important to keep the exam pattern in mind and pay special attention to important dates, names, and figures.
Give importance to Core Subjects: When preparing for the FMGE exam, it is advisable to follow a pyramid approach. This means starting with the pre and para-subjects mentioned earlier and then moving on to subjects like Medicine, Surgery, and Obgyn. These three subjects hold the highest weightage in the exam among the 19 subjects. While studying these subjects, it is crucial to focus on topics such as the cardiovascular and central nervous systems and their related pharmacological interventions, learning and memorizing important surgical procedures, sutures, and equipment, as well as understanding the pathology and treatment of significant gynecological illnesses, their complications, treatment, and signs of Obstetrics.
Practice Regularly: Solving question papers is crucial for any exam, including FMGE. It helps you get used to answering questions in the required format and within the given time limit. This should be a continuous process and an essential part of your preparation. The ideal approach is to complete a subject and then test your retention by attempting related questions. This will improve your recall and boost your confidence when taking the exam.
Review previous year's questions: Going through past question papers is vital for your preparation. It will help you identify the most important sections of the syllabus and serve as a roadmap for your studies.
Choose the right preparation platform: Given the vastness of the syllabus and the challenging nature of the exam, coaching centers that provide effective preparation have become extremely helpful.
Revision is necessary: The final stage of your preparation should involve selective yet comprehensive revision. It is recommended to attempt the first exam after one year of studying to allow sufficient time for revision. Focus on reviewing important concepts and statistics, and practice with grand and mock tests. Allocate your time according to the weightage given to different subjects.
Being versatile and diligent is essential for passing the FMGE exam. Seek proper guidance and expert assistance to enhance your efforts and maximize your chances of success. Maintaining a positive mindset and choosing the right preparation partners are crucial. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint.
