Hong Kong Doubles the Admission Quota for International Students

The public funded universities in Hong Kong will be allowed to offer 40% of their bachelors places to international students from 2024-25 academic year. On wednesday, during the annual policy speech, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced this exciting news for international students.

This decision will help to position Hong Kong as an international destination for education

Raising the cap for the 2024-25 academic year will increase the number of international students from 3,000 to about 6,000 of the total 15,000 student intake.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have confirmed that this decision is the first step in meeting Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s call for all government funded universities to double their admission quotas to 40% for students from outside the region. This decision will help to position Hong Kong as an international destination for education and a centre for research and innovation.

Eight educational institutions are subject to the quota, in which 5 Hong Kong universities are ranked in the top 100 universities in the world, according to QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education.

The government of the country is investing HKD 1 billion in the Government Scholarship Fund and the lifting of restrictions for international postgraduate students, as well as taking up part-time work to train students in two-years.

This move by the Hong Kong government will help international students to get easy admission at the top universities and build a global career.
