How New Visa Rules by the UK and Australia affects Indian Students to Study Abroad
This week, on December 11, Australia has announced to tighten the visa rules for international students and low-skilled workers. The country is also planning to tighten the English language test to work and study in Australia. Now, students are required to have a minimum score of 6.5 points, up from 6.0 and to get a student visa applicants must have a 6.0, up from 5.5.
Moreover, Indian students who have graduated from Australian universities will be eligible to apply for a temporary Graduate Visa for two years for an undergraduate degree, three years for completing a postgraduate degree and four years for completing a Ph.D. program.
Similarly, the UK has also announced some restrictions in the early of the December month. The Rishi Sunak-led British government raises the minimum salary for international workers to clear the eligibility criteria for getting a work visa by a third. The UK has also made it difficult for international students to bring their families while studying in the UK from January 2024.
Australia and the UK are recognized as the best destinations for abroad studies and have currently initiated a visa crackdown to curb immigration.
Know what student associations and experts speak on these changes:
Some Indian students and young professionals have shared their concerns about these new changes.
Amit Tiwari, President of, the Indian National Students Association (INSA-UK), said “ Indian students are unfairly targeted in the UK due to party politics. Indians who study and work in the UK contribute approximately 25 billion pounds every year to the UK economy. Indian students who want to study abroad have various options such as the USA, Canada, Germany and more, but UK universities are dependent on international students’ funds to stay financially afloat. INSA will talk about this matter with the higher authorities of the country to provide fairness to international students.”
On the other hand, experts also said that these new visa restrictions will not affect Indian students for their higher studies in Australia and the UK in 2024.
With these changes, Australia and the UK have still ranked as the top abroad destinations due to the quality of education and better career opportunities.
