NEW IELTS Writing Criteria and Band Descriptors
New IELTS writing criteria will be introduced earlier this year.
In the past, there were always two versions of the IELTS writing criteria and descriptors. The first was the public band descriptor, available to everyone, students and teachers.
The important thing in these new writing descriptors is that they include all the details from that top secret examiner's early criteria. It combines the two versions of band descriptors into one single document which is now available to everyone.
The big change is the inclusion of bolded text. The bolded text that you can show everywhere serves an important purpose. At the top of each Band descriptor page, bolded text indicates negative features that will limit a rating.
So, if your writing includes a feature described in the bolded text, you can't get a higher score in that specific criterion, even if the rest of your writing is perfect. What's also important in these new criteria are these sentences here. A script must fully fit the positive features of the descriptor at a particular level. This means that your writing needs to include the positive features described in the band descriptor.
The bolded text band descriptors are the same for both task one and task two. It proves that a candidate's answer has been totally memorised. If the examiner finds that you have written from your memory, you'll receive a zero band score.
