The UK has Proposed Reviews of the Graduate Route Visa for International Students

Last week in the UK, the British Home Secretary announced that the Sunak government will launch a review on the Graduate Route Visa for international students, providing them with a post-study work permit for two years after graduation.

James Cleverly from the House of Commons said that overseas students are a part of the  “robust action” and the UK government has launched a five-point plan for the immigration of international students.

The announced review will help in retaining highly skilled students. According to a new independent report on UK migration the review is significantly utilised by Indian students.

Generally, the review aims to safeguard the integrity and enhance the quality of education to study in the UK

MAC Chair Professor Brian Bell shared that the reviews are based on various considerations such as limitations on universities and courses, restrictions on activities and job types. The committee would provide recommendations according to the reviews and expect to report back around September-October 2024 if the Home Office Commission shares the review in early 2024.

MAC questions the primary objectives of the Graduate Route for international students in its annual report. According to it, the Graduate Route visa is emphasizing attracting more international students and also expressing skepticism on contribution to high-skilled jobs in the UK. An increase in preventing abuses rather than questioning the role of post-study work offers are the top reasons Indian students choose to study in the UK for higher education.

Over the past week, the UK has taken many steps to cut new migration. Studying in the UK may be the best destination for Indian students to get a high-quality education and an easy work permit after graduation.
