Founded in 1850, it is the oldest university in Australia and is one of the country's six sandstone universities. It was one of the first universities in the world to admit students solely on academic merit and opened its doors to women on the same basis as men. The university comprises eight academic faculties and university schools, through which it offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. The university has educated eight Australian prime ministers, including incumbent Anthony Albanese; two governors-general of Australia; thirteen premiers of New South Wales; 26 justices of the High Court of Australia, including five chief justices. The PhD research degree was first germinated in 1944, and began in 1947. Student Union: Student Board is responsible for the operational and strategic business of the USU. In May each year, the USU holds its Annual Elections to elect new Directors.
Sports Club: USU has many sports clubs to choose from. A volunteer-run Bushwalking Club, Most of the members are either current or former students, and the club is open to all. At SUBW, people come together for bushwalking, canyoning, abseiling and social events.
